Moving a piano is unlike moving any other piece of furniture. A standard upright piano weighs 150–250 kg; a grand piano can exceed 500 kg. They are acoustically sensitive, mechanically complex, and structurally fragile if lifted incorrectly. This guide covers everything you need to know about moving a piano in Brisbane — costs, what the process looks like, how to prepare, and the questions to ask before any removalist touches your instrument.

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Piano in Brisbane?

Relocation Rangers charges $250 for a ground-level piano move in Brisbane. This covers:

If stairs are involved at either end, or if the piano is a grand or baby grand, we provide a specialist quote — stair moves require additional crew and specialist lifting equipment. Always request a quote that specifies exact access conditions; no reputable Brisbane removalist will quote a stair piano move without a site inspection or detailed access assessment.

Types of Piano and What Affects the Price

The factors that most affect cost beyond piano type:

How We Move a Piano — Step by Step

Step 1 — Assessment and planning

Before the crew arrives, confirm access conditions at both addresses. Take photos of the piano’s location, any stairs, door widths, and the route from the piano to the truck. Share these with us at quote stage — it allows us to bring the right equipment and crew.

Step 2 — Prepare the piano

Close the keyboard lid and secure it with tape or a lock. Remove the music stand if it detaches. Cover the piano with moving blankets before the straps go on — straps directly on timber or veneer can leave marks.

Step 3 — Secure with specialist strapping

Specialist piano strapping distributes weight across the body of the instrument rather than relying on legs or the frame. For upright pianos, we use a piano board (a padded dolly) to which the piano is strapped vertically. This is the industry-standard approach for any stair or long-distance move.

Step 4 — Move on the piano board

The piano board is manoeuvred on wheels across level surfaces. On stairs, the board is carried or skidded with the piano in the vertical position. This requires physical strength, precise coordination, and knowledge of weight distribution — it is not a task for general furniture movers without specific piano experience.

Step 5 — Grand piano leg removal

Baby grand and grand pianos must have their legs removed before transport. The piano body is placed on a specialist grand piano board, wrapped securely, and loaded on its side. Legs, pedal lyre, and lid are wrapped separately. Reassembly at the destination requires careful positioning of the body before legs are reattached — any rushing at this stage risks cracking the soundboard or damaging the pedal mechanism.

Step 6 — Position in the new home

We place the piano in your nominated position, remove all protective wrapping, and check the keyboard is accessible and the castor wheels are stable. For grand pianos, legs are reattached and we assist with initial levelling.

What Happens After a Piano is Moved?

Tuning after every move

Every piano should be tuned after a move, regardless of how carefully it was transported. The change in humidity, temperature, and vibration during transit causes string tension to shift. Plan for a professional piano tuner visit 2–4 weeks after the move (allowing the piano to acclimatise to its new environment first).

Acclimatisation

Brisbane’s subtropical humidity can affect acoustic pianos significantly. Place your piano away from air conditioning vents and direct sunlight. Interior walls are preferable to exterior walls, which are subject to more temperature fluctuation. If your piano is moving from a cool, dry climate (Melbourne, Canberra) to Brisbane’s warmth, it may need multiple tunings to stabilise.

Moving a Piano Interstate from Brisbane

Interstate piano moves — Brisbane to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide — require specialist quoting. The additional considerations are:

For interstate piano moves, combine your piano quote with our long-distance removalists page for full service pricing. If you are moving Brisbane to Melbourne specifically, see our Brisbane to Melbourne guide for route and transit details.

Piano Storage in Brisbane

If you need to store a piano between addresses, Brisbane storage is available at $150/week per 20 ft container. Acoustic pianos should be stored in climate-controlled environments where possible. Ask about our storage facility conditions when booking — humidity and temperature control are essential for valuable instruments.

Suburbs We Regularly Move Pianos In

We move pianos across all Brisbane suburbs. Inner-city piano moves are particularly common in Paddington and Red Hill (older Queenslander homes with character layouts), New Farm (prestige apartment buildings), and Hamilton and Ascot (large private homes with formal music rooms). Apartment moves with lifts require building approval in advance — our team coordinates this as part of the booking process.

Frequently Asked Questions — Piano Removalists Brisbane

How much does it cost to move a piano in Brisbane?

Ground-level upright piano moves start at $250. Stair moves, grand pianos, and interstate moves require a specialist quote — contact us with access details and piano type for an accurate price.

Can a piano be moved up stairs?

Yes, but it requires specialist crew and equipment. Do not attempt to move a piano up or down stairs without professionals who have specific stair piano experience. The risk of injury (to people) and damage (to the instrument and property) is significant. We will assess stair access at quote stage and provide a realistic cost.

Does a piano need to be tuned after moving?

Always. Even a move of a few hundred metres will shift string tension enough to affect tuning. Wait 2–4 weeks after the move for the piano to acclimatise to its new environment before booking a tuner.

How do you move a baby grand piano?

Baby grand and grand pianos are disassembled — legs removed, pedal lyre detached, lid secured — before being placed on a specialist grand piano board. The board is wrapped and loaded on its side into the truck. Reassembly at destination is the final step. This process takes longer than an upright move and requires a specialist quote.

Can I move a piano myself?

We strongly advise against it. The weight of a piano (150–250+ kg for an upright), combined with its shape and centre of gravity, makes self-moving a serious injury risk. Dropping a piano can also cause irreparable internal damage that is not visible externally. A professional piano move is a small cost relative to the value of the instrument and the cost of a back injury.

Do you move digital pianos and keyboards?

Yes. Digital pianos and stage keyboards are included in our standard removal service and do not require specialist pricing. They are wrapped, padded, and transported with the rest of your furniture.
