A fridge is one of the most awkward items in any move — it’s large, heavy, has a compressor that doesn’t like being tilted, and contains food that needs to be managed carefully on moving day. Do it right and your fridge arrives at the new address undamaged and ready to power up. Do it wrong and you risk a broken compressor, a damaged floor, or a mould-ridden interior. This guide covers everything you need to know to move a fridge safely in Brisbane.

How to move a fridge — step by step

Step 1: 48–24 hours before: Switch off and defrost

Turn off your fridge and freezer at least 24 hours before moving day. Remove all food. Open the doors to allow air circulation. Place towels under the fridge to catch any melt water. Remove drawers, shelves, and trays — pack these separately (wrap glass shelves in bubble wrap).

Step 2: The night before: Clean and dry

Wipe down the interior with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Dry thoroughly — a moist interior will create mould during transit. Leave the doors ajar overnight to ventilate. Tape the power cord to the back or side of the fridge.

Step 3: Moving day: Secure the doors

Tape the fridge doors shut using strong packing tape across the handles and body. Do not tape directly onto finished surfaces — use tape that won’t damage the exterior. For French door or side-by-side models, secure both doors.

Step 4: Transport: Keep it upright

Communicate to the removalist crew that the fridge must remain upright during transport. Our crew will use a heavy-duty trolley to move it out of the kitchen, manoeuvre it through doorways, and load it into the truck secured in an upright position with strapping.

Step 5: On arrival: Settling period

Position the fridge in its final location before switching it on. If the fridge was upright throughout the entire move, wait at least 1–2 hours before switching on. If it was tilted at any point, wait 2–4 hours minimum (check your manual). This allows the compressor oil to resettle into the correct position.

Step 6: After the settling period: Switch on and check

Switch the fridge on and set to your preferred temperatures. Allow 4–6 hours for the fridge to reach operating temperature before loading it with food. Listen for any unusual compressor noises in the first 24 hours — if you hear anything unusual, contact your fridge manufacturer.

Special considerations for Brisbane’s climate

Brisbane’s subtropical climate means fridges often run harder than in cooler cities. The interior of a Brisbane moving truck can reach very high temperatures on a summer moving day — this is not ideal for your fridge (or anything else in the truck). If you’re moving in summer, try to time the truck journey to avoid the hottest part of the day, keep transit time as short as possible, and ventilate the truck where possible.

For long-distance moves — for example, interstate removals from Brisbane — the fridge will be in the truck for a day or more. In this case, the defrost and dry-out process is even more important to prevent mould growth during transit. Our interstate truck maintains reasonable temperature conditions, but a thoroughly dried interior is still the safest preparation.

Let us know at booking if you have a particularly large or unusual fridge — extra-large French door models, commercial-grade units, or wine fridges all have specific access requirements that are easier to plan for in advance.

Frequently asked questions — how to move a fridge

How long before moving do I need to defrost a fridge?

Most modern frost-free fridges don’t require manual defrosting, but the freezer compartment often has ice build-up. We recommend switching the fridge off and emptying it at least 24 hours before moving day to allow any ice to melt and moisture to dry. Some older models with manual defrost may need 48 hours.

Can you move a fridge on its side?

Ideally no — fridges should be transported upright. If a fridge must be tilted (for example, to fit through a narrow doorway), tilt it no more than 45 degrees and keep it in the least-tilted position possible for the shortest time. After a non-upright transit, allow the fridge to stand upright for at least 2–4 hours before switching it on, to allow the compressor oil to resettle.

How do you move a fridge upstairs?

Moving a fridge upstairs requires a stair-climbing trolley and at least 2 people — ideally 3 for anything over 90L capacity. Our crew carries the appropriate equipment for stair carries. Let us know about stair access when you book so we can bring the right gear.

Does moving a fridge damage the compressor?

Moving a fridge on its side or at a severe angle can allow compressor oil to flow into the cooling lines. This is why tilting should be minimised and why the settling period (2–4 hours upright before switching on) is important. If the fridge is transported upright the entire time, the risk of compressor damage is very low.

How long should I wait before turning the fridge back on after moving?

If the fridge was transported upright the entire time, you can switch it on within 1–2 hours. If it was tilted at any point during transport, wait at least 2–4 hours — some manufacturers recommend up to 24 hours. Check your fridge’s manual for the specific recommendation for your model.

What do I do with fridge food on moving day?

Pack fridge and freezer contents into coolers with ice packs on the morning of moving day. Most frozen food will stay frozen for 4–6 hours in a well-packed cooler. Refrigerated items are safe for 2–4 hours. Plan to shop for fresh perishables after your move is complete.

Can removalists move a large American-style fridge?

Yes. Large side-by-side and French door fridges are heavy (80–130 kg) and wide. We may need to remove the doors for narrow doorways or stair access — this is a standard procedure. Let us know the fridge brand and model when you book so we can check dimensions in advance.
